The Moves // v. 2 - “The Art of Song vs. The Co-Write”
Today’s standards of record making in the music industry have spurred about from numerous reasons. We live in a time where the posterboy/postergirl rule the world of mainstream, where the listener may or may not have a care in the world where the songs/ideas originated from. I’ve come across those die hard, elitist music lovers who live to fight against dishonesty in music. I’ve also come across those wall street marketers who have not a clue of the many sub-cultures of Music. I’m intrigued.
I know this matter varies depending on the type of genre/song we’re speaking of… But humor me:
A. How would it make you feel if that very personal, tear-jerking, genuine song that your favorite artist sings was written by someone else.
B. Is the music that is co-written any less passionate and legitimate than the music that is completely DIY?

A. I think I would feel misled in a way. One of the most powerful connections between an artist and their fans is from the bond a person feels relating them to this artist. A feeling of ‘hey, this person gets me; they’ve been through what I have.’ And to have that and then suddenly come to the realization that it was false would be a disappointment and would make it less genuine. The song would no longer be from that artist that you looked up to, it would be from someone you never even knew of.
B. On the complete opposite side, I don’t think co-writing makes the music any less passionate. If the artist has the emotion behind the song and the general feel and idea of it, and then goes to a writer for help, the passion is still there. Needing help for thinking of how to phrase something isn’t the same as having someone write the whole song for you.
